Dorothy Sayers Classical School
Mission Statement
Under the authority of scripture and the lordship of Jesus Christ,
Dorothy Sayers Classical School assists Christ-centered home schooling families in their God-given mandate to educate their children (c.f. Deuteronomy 6: 6-7 and Ephesians 6:4) by providing a distinctively Christian, rigorous, and affordable academic experience.
DSCS teaches children to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty through the seven liberal arts and sciences under the primary leadership of their parents, understanding that all reality ultimately falls under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
DSCS nurtures children intellectually and spiritually, encouraging them to grow to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.
DSCS enables children to fulfill their calling, challenging them to transform families, institutions, and nations for the glory of God.
What do we mean by this Mission Statement?
Under the authority of scripture and the lordship of Jesus Christ,
DSCS respectfully and gladly affirms sola scriptura. Believing that all scripture is the sole ultimate and infallible norm, we submit our lives to God’s purposes, for our good and His glory. Believing that Christianity is an entire system of thought, every endeavor, academic, interpersonal, business, or extracurricular, will be interpreted through the reality of the Triune God and his sovereignty as revealed in the Holy Scriptures.
DSCS assists Christ-centered home schooling families in their God-given mandate to educate their children……
DSCS is not a school, in the traditional sense, rather it is a school by the primary definition of the word; a place in which persons are instructed… Nor is DSCS a Christian school, rather it is a school for Christians and their children, who are being taught by parental example through both Word and deed, their need to accept Jesus Christ as Savior and live a life that exhibits him as their Lord, DSCS seeks to serve and build community with like-minded Christian parents desiring help in providing a rigorous Classical education to their home schooled children. Additionally DSCS seeks to keep educational costs reasonably priced. This commitment is based upon accountability to God and understanding tuition costs need to accommodate one income families seeking to educate their children within their home. This requires mothers to set aside the demands of a fulltime second income career and dedicate their time and energy to tasks commonly transferred to others.
DSCS teaches children to purse truth, goodness, and beauty through…
DSCS will inform its students through the classical tradition; Central to this tradition is the use of the Trivium which develops the intellectual capabilities through the use of the tools of learning. Grammar School students will build a strong foundation, beginning with the basics of spelling, reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as an emphasis upon memorization, observation, and developing logic skills. Students entering the second stage of the Trivium, the logic stage, while continuing to build upon the foundational skills, will be taught how to reason from a logical and explicitly Christian perspective. Socratic pedagogy will be used to lead the students in understanding the ordered relationships between ideas and events. Older Rhetoric School students will continue learning under Socratic pedagogy to complete a multi-year study of classical rhetoric and will be given the opportunity to explore and evaluate seminal ideas. Art, music, and sports will be provided and encouraged so that the student can develop in all aspects, spiritual, mental, and physical. Philippians 4:8 will be the aesthetic mandate taught so that our students would learn to think on “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, think on these things.”
DSCS nurtures children intellectually and spiritually…
DSCS will provide intellectual stimulation and instruction which aims to teach the students to learn to think for themselves and to become lifetime learners. Furthermore, DSCS will model the Law of Christ by using both instruction and “along the way” opportunities to encourage its students to grow to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.
DSCS enables children to fulfill their calling…
DSCS will utilize the principles of a liberal education to graduate students with godly character that has been developed through hard work and submission to authority, both the authority of the Word of God, and the authority of their parents and instructors. Understanding that work is a gift from God, they will be diligent to complete tasks and other responsibilities left in their charge. By God’s grace, the DSCS graduate will be equipped both in writing and speaking and be a biblical, thoughtful and interdisciplinary thinker, using his gifts to make a difference in this world for the glory of God while influencing others of their need to prepare for this life and the life thereafter.
